GWK Potato Laboratory
The presence of the bacteria that causes bacterial wilt and the viruses Potato Virus Y (PVY) and the Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) in potatoes, can lead to an outbreak of the diseases and huge economic losses. Therefore, it is essential to test tubers for the presence of this bacteria.
The Northern Cape Laboratory Services in Douglas is one of five laboratories nationwide that perform these tests on potato samples. This laboratory receives leaf and tuber samples throughout the year. Official, unofficial and diagnostic potato samples are tested by the laboratory.
The peak season for the laboratory is annually between April and August during which approximately 400 000 seed-potatoes are received here. During the testing season approximately 9 000 seed-potatoes are peeled for bacterial testing and 4 000 seed-potatoes for virus testing.
