GWK Farm Foods
From nature, for nature…
When the first sod was turned at Modder River in August 2013, it was the start of a grand dream that has now become reality. Two years later, GWK is proud to announce that we have successfully completed one of the greatest developments in agriculture and food production in South Africa over the past five years.
The GWK Farm Foods mills, as well as the biscuit and pasta factory, are already in production, with the official announcement planned to take place during April 2016.
During the planning of the plant, major emphasis was placed on following a “green” approach – part of GWK’s promise of responsibility towards the environment. A container dam was built at the plant for the collection and recycling of storm water, as well as purified sewage water, with which the gardens will be irrigated. Energy-saving lighting and motors were installed for propulsion. The orientation of the building was also taken into consideration during the design stage so that the influence of sunlight during the hot summers could be reduced to the minimum.
The unique, and surely the most important, characteristic of the products manufactured here, is their origin. GWK, and therefore GWK Farm Foods and the plants, is totally owned by its producers. It is therefore also these producers who deliver the raw product to the mills in order to eventually be processed into wholesome, healthy products. The uniformity of the source of the raw products ensures top quality products – crops are planted in the same soils, climate and varieties. Changes to the composition of wheat is minimal. We can therefore guarantee quality products, because we know their origin. Consistency is also key during the production processes, in order to always produce the same high standard consumer products.
In all, there are about 100 members of staff working on-site and each is responsible for their own, unique tasks. Quality control is therefore also applied here by designated staff in various areas, who take responsibility for those specific areas. The staff members who form part of the team, are skilled and experienced – some with years of experience in the industry.
Quality was not sacrificed in the process during which the plant was equipped. The best, latest technology and equipment in the world was acquired for the plant, which will largely be automatically controlled. A fully equipped, modern laboratory, which constantly monitors and tests to ensure quality control, forms part of the plant, while Halaal status has already been awarded to the factory. ISO and HACCP certification will further contribute to quality. The plant also has its own water and electricity supply.
Two mills are ready to handle the production, so as to ensure that the process continues should there be a problem with one of the mills. These mills have the capacity to produce 600 tons of meal per day. The factory can produce 580 tons of biscuits a month, as well as 550 tons of pasta. Where distribution is concerned, the plant has the capacity to send out twenty inter-link trucks with produce daily.
Quality, consistency and origin on the farm. That is what consumers will taste in our local, but world class products.
